After saying my goodbyes, I get out of town on 40 miles of freeway, past the nuclear powerplant, and have the usual mix of tandem trailer trucks and everything else overtake me. But a strong tailwind makes it easy riding, so I'm pleased with the fast progress. Then I hit scenic Rt. 2, which again is about as nice as the average US country road. Still beats the alternative, of course.
Some kids at a gas station suggest a really scenic alternative right before Kingston, complete with a small ferry (free), and a load of wineries. Best part there is a real bakery selling 'butter tarts', and - me being a sucker for French food - a French cafe serving a French lunch.
'Megawatt Drive', the road to the nuclear powerplant.
Recognize where he got the inspiration for this?
The solar panels again, still looking very high-tech.
Some hours later I'm in Ottawa, having booked what turns out to be a Bed & Breakfast in a boring suburb, instead of a motel. Serves me right for focusing on price only, but I arrive just as the first drops of a downpour starts, so it was a lucky choice after all. Once that is over, I'm off to a cyber-cafe to send backup for my vacation pictures to Denmark, as using a wifi connection will take some 22-23 hours instead of ten minutes.
'Sakura Game' cyber cafe, filled with Chinese teens loudly playing internet games.
